Dr.’s Candice Pollack and Maxwell Mitchell recently received their Doctor of Chiropractic degrees and their respective licenses graduating from the University Of Bridgeport College Of Chiropractic. With a significant level of youthful enthusiasm tempered by with a dosage of ‘down economy’ reality, Dr.’s Pollack and Mitchell will be seeing their dream come true as they open their very own practice, Advanced Physical Medicine, at 444 Washington Avenue in North Haven, CT. As former competitive athletes, they have followed their passion and hope to build a sports based practice.
Both Candice and Max agree that the journey to date has been quite challenging fraught with ups and downs. After speaking with a lending officer at Quinnipiac Bank in Hamden, the duo was directed to the CT Community Investment Corporation (CTCIC) also located in Hamden. Connecting with CTCIC’s Vice Presidents, Carolyn Welch and Buck Harris, they began the arduous project of writing their business plan. Let’s keep in mind, that neither Candice nor Max had ever taken a business course during their academic career. This would be no ‘walk in the park’. Buck suggested they might want to connect with the CT Small Business Development Center (CSBDC) for more granular assistance as needed.
Armed with the CTCIC Business Plan templates and a whole bunch of desire and motivation, Dr.’s Pollack and Mitchell hunkered down and ‘grappled’ with a new language and new science known as ‘business’. They researched the market and determined that the North Haven area could use additional chiropractic service and they subsequently located available office space. By the end of November of 2010, they had created a very solid business plan draft document which was ready for review by Ken Kollmeyer at the CSBDC. Pulling out his ‘fine tooth comb’, Ken reviewed the document and recommended some tweaking that would put the finishing touches on the document and enable them to submit with an application to CTCIC.
In December of 2010, they were notified by CTCIC that their $40k SBA microloan application package had passed muster with the CTCIC Loan Review Committee and that their funding would be in place sometime in January 2011. Closing the loan on January 28, 2011, the team will use the proceeds to build a website, build out and furnish the office space and purchase the necessary chiropractic equipment to be used for treatments. A ‘soft’ grand opening is projected for March of 2011.
While many individuals and teams embark upon the similar journeys, most do not finish. Dr.’s Pollack and Mitchell succeeded because of their passion for their profession, their hard work and dedication, their teamwork, and their ability to listen, follow directions and to get along with people.
Congratulations to Dr. Candice Pollack and Dr. Maxwell Mitchell for a job well done.
